Yamoto, Miyagi, Japan — July 2002
Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) Matsushima Air Base is located in Yamoto, Miyagi. Matsushima Air Base is the home of the JASDF Blue Impulse demonstration team.
The Blue Impulse usually flies six planes at each airshow. However, they lacked two planes at that time due to a serious crash in July 2000. They use the Kawasaki build trainer, T-4. The Blue Impulse flies twice at an airshow in Matsushima Air Base.
This is one of the airplanes of the AIRock Aerobatic Team. The chief pilot, Mr. Rock Iwai, was a fighter pilot in JASDF. To continue to fly in the air, he took an airshow license in the United States and became an airshow pilot.
Unfortunately, he died during a flight exercise on April 27, 2005. I would like to express my condolences to him. This is a great loss.
The F-2 is the latest Japanese support fighter based on the F-16. In Japan, the term "support fighter" is preferred using to "attacker." The wings are bigger than those of the F-16 in order to carry four air-to-ship missiles.
The Mitsubishi T-2 is a Japanese-built supersonic trainer. The first prototype flew in 1971. The F-1, a single-seated support fighter, was developed based on the T-2.
This was the first Japanese-built airplane after the World War II. The first prototype flew in 1958.
The Kawasaki C-1 is a jet-engined STOL transport aircraft. The first prototype flew in 1970.

Although the F-4 family has retired in the United States, the JASDF still uses the F-4EJ and RF-4J. Most of them were built under license by Mitsubishi Heavy Industry.
